About Tangaroa Blue
Our purpose is to lead, inspire and ignite action, empowering the removal and
prevention of litter from entering the marine environment, for a healthier and
cleaner ocean.
Who are Tangaroa Blue?
Tangaroa Blue Foundation (an Australian registered charity) works to prevent and remove marine debris in Australia and across regions. We use the Australian Marine Debris Initiative framework to inspire behaviour change, innovation and empower communities, industry and government to make data-driven decisions that improve ocean health.
What is the Australian Marine Debris Initiative?
The Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database is a national platform that tracks and records marine debris data collected by over 3,100 network partners, including volunteers, organisations, and communities across Australia. It enables the identification of pollution sources and trends, guiding targeted actions to reduce marine debris at its origin. Managed by Tangaroa Blue Foundation, the AMDI Database supports evidence-based strategies for protecting marine environments and wildlife.
Since the AMDI started in 2004, more than 2000 tonnes of marine debris have been removed from the Australian coastline and recorded on the AMDI Database.
Our AMDI network of volunteers, community groups, organisations and Tangaroa Blue Foundation team members work tirelessly to:
- Remove what’s already out there:Â Removing marine debris from the environment restores the natural state and mitigates the toxic effects of plastics degrading in the environment.
- Stop the flow of litter at the source:Â We do more than clean-up. Through the AMDI, we record data on what marine debris we find to use as evidence for source reduction plans and influence decision-markers on environmental policies.
- Reduce the amount of waste produced:Â Waste that does not exist cannot become a problem. Tangaroa Blue works with stakeholders to promote and implement best-practice sustainable solutions and true circular economy models – no greenwashing!
SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES
Tangaroa Blue Foundation provides support to communities, organisations, agencies and schools through training, clean-up materials, educational resources and debris analysis. This collaborative approach has provided valuable data on the types and amounts of marine debris impacting the coastline and equipped communities with the right resources to implement successful marine debris source reduction plans in their area.
