Goals
The Hand Bin is designed to be a convenient solution for beach litter. Simple in design, aimed at reducing litter and educating others on the value of our marine environment. To encourage changes in behaviour, enabling people to do the right thing and inspire positive change.
To monitor and conduct litter collection audits at the following locations, The Strand, Townsville, Rowes Bay, Townsville and Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas across 3 months.
The Hand Bin is designed by Share the Word Design Studio and a similar successful campaign was trialled in the Mornington Peninsula.
Measuring Success
How did you measure the success of the
SRP?
Some examples include:
– How did you measure/show the reduction of litter, through data collection?
– How many assets were created and distributed?
– Targeted audience (what type of audience were reached and how many people? How was this measured?)
– How did you measure community engagement?
Conducted 3 phased audits:
A litter collection audit was conducted at the three locations (The Strand, Townsville, Rowes Bay, Townsville and Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas) where the hand-bins were implemented 3 times, in 2-week intervals.
Assets: Beach Hand Bins, Informative Posters
Collect data on the number of assets distributed/viewed.
Media Assets: Hand Bin Landing Page, multiple social media posts, and social media tiles created by Share the Word Studios.
Audience Reach: Locals and beachgoers in the areas of Port Douglas, Townsville, Magnetic Island, and Mon Repos. Online reach (Facebook and Instagram)
Community Engagement: Hand Bins handed out at the Ocean Film Festival (Townsville and Cairns), Alva Beach Community Clean-up, Magnetic Island Clean-up Australia Day event, Wildlife Surrounds American Universities Program on Magnetic Island, Mission Beach State School, OWHI Ecosystems Monitoring Group Magnetic Island, Nurdle Project Gippsland Victoria
Data Collection & Reporting
What methodology did you use to collect
the data?
How was the data recorded and shared?
(For example, audits, survey frequency, AMDI Database) Include evidence of the methodology used relevant to your type of location. Monitoring Methodology – Tangaroa Blue
Data was collected using the AMDI according to a transect methodology for Coastal Shoreline.
Results and Reflections
Positive Outcomes
What was the outcome of your SMART goal?
– Was there a reduction in targeted debris/ litter?
– What assets were created/how many were distributed?
– Did you reach your targeted audience and how was the community engaged?
Include website links and social media platforms
Our SRP is still in action, the following is updated as of 29/05/2023 with continued data being collected.
Final Assets and Deliverables: 5000 x Beach Hand Bins, Informative Posters (horizontal and vertical design) printed & distributed
Media Audience Reached: TBC
Funding
What did the SRP cost?
– Cash fundings for asset creation and implementation
– What In-kind funding support did you receive from partners/organisations?
Approx. $10, 000 budget for SRP
Assets – Design costs, hand bins, wicker baskets, ceramic bowls, laminated posters, postage to partners/businesses.
Project Officer and staff funding
Challenges & Improvements
What challenges did you face during the SRP?
– How were these addressed and adapted to?
What could be improved if this SRP was to be replicated?
Unfortunately, several potential partners/businesses we reached out to within Townsville, Magnetic Island, and Port Douglas area could not be involved in the SRP at this time.
We would recommend more time to have in-depth engagements with businesses to allow for a wider impact and for the distribution of the hand bins.
Future Opportunities
What were some additional positive outcomes?
Is your SRP still in action?
(For example, have any partners/organisations, Local Council, agencies, or community groups continued to implement your SRP?)
Include website links & social media
Some local schools contacted Tangaroa Blue about the SRP campaign to implement it in their local area. They found out about the program through social media, which could be a useful tool if we wanted to expand the campaign in the future.
