OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP
Learn more about Operation Clean Sweep in action through plastic pellet source reduction plans
What is Operation Clean Sweep?
Operation Clean Sweep works with plastic industry members to make zero plastic pellet loss a business goal.
Plastic resin pellets (sometimes called nurdles) are the feedstock for the plastics industry, being the basis of all plastic products – from plastic bags to bottles to containers. They are lost into the environment during manufacturing and transport when spills aren’t cleaned up, so they enter the stormwater system ending up in our oceans.
The Operation Clean Sweep Program works with industry members, providing checklists, video resources and a manual on how to reduce plastic pellet leakage in their business.
Why are plastic pellets dangerous to marine life?
Plastic resin pellets are found on beaches all over the world. Being extremely small and resembling fish eggs, they have the potential to be ingested by marine animals and seabirds in enormous numbers.
They also accumulate toxins from the water, resulting in a toxic pellet that can cause blockages and toxicity in the tissues of wildlife that may ingest them.
