Why a Litter Hero campaign?
With single-use plastic items plaguing the Great Barrier Reef, in May this year, we ran an online ReefClean Source Reduction Plan Workshop looking at how to prevent litter from ending up in the environment.
We are focusing on creating a positive campaign that recognises Litter Heros because we want to validate the right behaviour.
The Australian Marine Debris Initiative database shows public space litter is impacting the reef and waterways across Australia. So join the campaign to be a Litter Hero.
How does the campaign work?
On the ground, we are rolling out targeted directional signage at a number of public space litter hotspot locations around reef catchments. We are then monitoring the amount of litter in these hotspots before and after the signage is implemented.
How can individuals get involved?
The easiest way to show your support for the campaign is to display the Litter Hero imagery on your social channels.
How can councils help?
We need councils to help reinforce the right behaviour by:
- Downloading the campaign assets at reefclean.org/litterhero.
- Displaying the campaign messaging at hotspot locations in their council area
Why should you join the campaign?
It’s free! And you’ll help to reduce public space litter that ends up in our waterways
How long will the campaign run for?
The 2nd round of the on-ground Litter Hero campaign will be launched in September and the first sites will be reported on by October 30.
