We are so excited to have the Conflict Island Conservation Initiative as a partner in Project ReCon!
Project ReCon is a collaboration between Tangaroa Blue and Satlink, a world-leading provider of technological solutions for the fishing sector. Tangaroa Blue and our AMDI partners collect commercial fishing GPS buoys during clean-up events, and Satlink facilitates reassigning ownership of these buoys from the commercial fishing fleet to Tangaroa Blue. This partnership enables us to embark on an innovative journey to address the ghost net issue in our oceans.
With the help of our amazing AMDI partners, such as the Conflict Island Conservation Initiative Rangers, we can track ghost nets that are discovered but cannot be immediately removed due to logistical constraints. By keeping these nets under surveillance, we coordinate recovery efforts effectively and ensure their impact is minimized.
But there’s more! Virtual fences can be established and utilized to notify relevant agencies when a tracked ghost net is in proximity to sensitive marine environments, reefs, or poses a navigational hazard to ships. This proactive approach enhances the protection of our precious ocean ecosystems.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to volunteer Cathy Jeff Glindemann for delivering the first GPS buoy to the Conflict Island Conservation Initiative Rangers during her visit to the Conflict Islands last month!
We also want to express our gratitude to Satlink, Global Ghost Gear Initiative, and the Ocean Conservancy for their support in Project ReCon. Together we can work together to tackle ghost nets in our ocean!
Stay tuned for more updates about Project ReCon!
