ReefClean: Chilli Beach Clean-up, Cape York

When: 27th July – 4th August 2024 (including travel)
For more information and to register please contact fernanda@tangaroablue.org

Chilli Beach is a 7km stretch of white tropical beach, fringed with coconut palms and impressive sand dunes, situated on the lands of the Kuuku Ya’u people. Unfortunately, it is also another hotspot for marine debris in the remote Cape York region. We will rehabilitate the stretch of coastline over five days by removing, sorting and recording rubbish items from this beach and entering it into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database.

We will meet and depart from Cairns early in the morning, travelling to Archer River where we will spend our first night on the road. We will make some side stops over the two-day drive before reaching our campsite which we will call home for the next five days.

Seats are limited so register early to secure your spot!

Volunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join our convoy to drive up to this event, or can meet us on site, just let us know.

These trips are very fun and rewarding but also very challenging. Volunteers need to be fit and comfortable camping in remote locations with limited facilities. A pre registration interview will be conducted to assess the suitability of volunteers and discuss any questions.
We will be in close proximity to the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River, so basic shopping facilities are a relatively short trip away by car. The camp area is very basic with only toilets onsite. We will set up a shower tent for quick bucket showers.
We will set up our kitchen and prepare our meals together, so all food and equipment will be provided. All you need to bring is your sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillow, mattress, etc). Please keep bags small as space in the vehicles is limited.
On this trip we will be travelling through, and working on the land and sea Country of the Kuuku Ya’u people, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

ReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and is delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation and ReefClean partners.
