Mapoon Beach Clean-up – Cape York, QLD

The only event on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula! The Back Beach of Mapoon is an exposed 14km stretch of beach north of the mining town Weipa where we work together with the Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers.
Due to its location on the Gulf of Carpentaria where most of the lost fishing gear of the Timor Sea gets trapped in the whirling current, this is the beach where we frequently pull giant ghost nets out of the sand and where we have also found more thongs and plastic drink bottles than anywhere else in the country.
For five days we will be collecting and sorting the rubbish from this remote beach. We will stay at a basic bush camping area where we set up our kitchen and prepare our meals together. Kitchen equipment will be provided, but you will need to bring your own sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillow, mattress, etc).
We will depart from Cairns at 8am and will travel over two days to the event and back. Seats are limited so register early to secure your spot! Volunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join our convoy to drive up to this event, or can meet us up there!
