Mackay Islands Beach Clean-up – QLD

What: Mackay Islands Beach Clean-up – QLD
Where: Departing from Mackay – Cleaning up Penrith, Prudhoe and Curlew Islands
When: 2nd-8th May, 2021
To register: Please email mathilde@tangaroablue.org
Registrations are now open for an amazing opportunity to clean-up some of the incredible remote islands off Mackay, part of the traditional land and sea country of the Darumbal, Yuibera and Ngaro people. This trip will include a small group of volunteers travelling aboard Blue Planet Marine’s vessel Phantom IV to clean-up Penrith, Prudhoe and the Curlew Islands over 7 days. Please note that exact locations may vary depending on the weather.
This area is internationally famous for its rugged, green-clad islands, blue waters and white sands. But behind that beauty lies much more: a tumultuous geological history, a long tradition of Indigenous use, and a complex ecosystem with thousands of animals and plants, including rare and endangered species. Jump aboard to help us protect this incredible ecosystem!
There will be a lot of getting on and off boats in remote areas so you will require a good level of fitness and agility to be part of this event.
We will sleep on the Phantom IV, a 19 metre mono-hull vessel designed and modified for
environmental research and monitoring, and all food will be provided. Some bedding will be supplied, but volunteers who are happy to sleep on the deck will need to bring a swag.
We will also provide all gear necessary for the clean-up so all you need to bring is a pair of enclosed shoes suitable for getting wet, sleeping gear, sun safe clothing and a reusable water bottle. A suggested packing list and specific meeting point will be provided upon approval of each volunteer’s registration.
Places are strictly limited so get in early to secure a spot!
