When: Saturday 15th of July – Sunday 23rd July 2023

Chili Beach is a 7km stretch of white tropical beach, fringed with coconut palms and impressive sand dunes, situated on the lands of the Kuuku Ya’u people. Unfortunately, it is also another hotspot for marine debris in the remote Cape York region. We will rehabilitate the stretch of coastline over five days by removing, sorting and recording rubbish items from this beach and entering it into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database.

We will meet and depart from Cairns early in the morning, travelling to Coen where we will spend our first night on the road. We will make some side stops over the two-day drive before reaching our campsite which we will call home for the next five days.

Seats are limited so register early to secure your spot!

Volunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join our convoy to drive up to this event, or can meet us on site, just let us know.

We will be in close proximity to the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River, so basic shopping facilities are a relatively short trip away by car. The camp area is very basic with only toilets onsite and we will be able to do one shower run throughout the week to QLD Parks and Wildlife’s base.

We will set up our kitchen and prepare our meals together, so all food and equipment will be provided. All you need to bring is your sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillow, mattress, etc).
On this trip we will be travelling through, and working on the land and sea Country of the Kuuku Ya’u people, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

Funded by the Department of Environment and Science.
