AUSMAP / ReefClean 2022 Report

As part of the ReefClean project, microplastic surveys have been conducted in coastal areas surrounding the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). These surveys aim to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of microplastics and contribute to mapping the extent of their accumulation in waterways and beaches. Funding Empowers Citizen Science: Monitoring Marine Debris Across Queensland

We are excited to announce the publication of scientific paper that highlights the invaluable contributions of the citizen science community in monitoring marine debris across Queensland, Australia. The study sheds light on the major drivers of marine debris and provides a crucial baseline assessment of debris accumulation along the coast. Coordinated by the Tangaroa Blue Foundation, the ReefClean monitoring network played a role in gathering high-resolution data, covering a stretch of 18 degrees of latitude, spanning approximately 1800 kilometres.

2022 ReefClean Report

The 2022 ReefClean Report has been released, showcasing the fourth year of the five-year ReefClean project funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust. The initiative aims to remove and prevent marine debris along the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) through community, monitoring, annual GBR Clean-up, Source Reduction Plan (SRP), school, training and disaster management clean-ups. New Litter Hero Beach Hand Bins

Littering is a major environmental issue that continues to affect our planet’s health. The increasing amount of waste that ends up in our oceans is not only harmful to marine life but also poses a significant threat to human health. The ReefClean ‘Litter Hero’ campaign has partnered with designer and environmental advocate, Josie Jones to develop a solution to help this problem – the Beach Hand Bin.

New and Improved AMDI App Launch

The Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) is set to launch its new and improved Marine Debris and Litter Collection App on March 31st at 9 am! Since its establishment in 2004, AMDI has been at the forefront of addressing marine debris and litter issues across Australia. This national marine debris database has recorded over 23 million items to date, thanks to each and every person who has contributed!

Successful IOT Grant to help Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Island Marine Parks

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is one of 17 grantees chosen to deliver projects that will support the recently proclaimed Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands marine parks. Rig Recycle Seeks to Reel In Victoria Fishing Litter

Victorian fishers can now recycle their unwanted and broken fishing tackle. Tangaroa Blue’s Rig Recycle Program collects fishing line, reels, sinkers, spools and spool packaging so it can be repaired, reused and recycled. The program is supported by Sustainability Victoria’s Circular Economy Fund and will see 60 recycling bins deployed at key locations across the state. The Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database shows fishing litter is one of the top 10 items recovered during community clean-ups.

Ditch the Flick comes to the City of Wyndham

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is joining forces with the City of Wyndham to launch this campaign which aims to encourage behavioural change in cigarette butt disposal amongst the local smoking population. Litter data collected from 23 stormwater drains across the City of Wyndham during the Let’s Strain the Drain Project was recorded in the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database.
