Every year from May to September the Tangaroa Blue crew makes several trips to Cape York to hold multi-day clean-ups at various locations.
Cape York is known as one of Australia’s last true wilderness areas. Our volunteers can attest that visiting these remote areas with us has been life-enhancing, with many wanting to join us year after year.
Even though the area is remote, this region has not been immune to the effects of pollution. 90% of the debrise collected comes from offshore sources. Of the debris collected, 95% of it is made up of plastic.
10 Years on Chilli Beach
This year is extra special, as we’ll be celebrating our 10 Year anniversary of clean-ups on Chilli Beach. Over the past decade, a whopping 601,270 items, weighing 35 tonne, have been recorded, and that is not even all of the debris that has been pulled off the shores since 2011. We are grateful for the dedication of volunteers, the QPWS Rangers, the Kuuku Ya’u Land Trust Rangers, Lockhart River School students, and community members over the years.
