  • April 9, 2026

We're hiring Esky Library Project Officer on Christmas Island

Role Title: Esky Library Project Officer – Indian Ocean Territories
Employment Status: Part-time (approx. 8 hours per week)
Reports To: Business Development Manager
Location: Christmas Island (working from home, regular fieldwork) *Candidates must already reside on Christmas Island

Start Date: Immediate

About the Esky Library

The Esky Library is a community-led initiative managed by the Tangaroa Blue Foundation. Our mission is to eliminate single-use polystyrene (EPS) waste in the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) by providing a sustainable, reusable alternative for freight. Following a highly successful trial that diverted 1000 polystyrene boxes from ending up on the island, we are now entering an exciting growth phase.

We are proud to announce that this next stage of the project is supported by the IOT Regional Development Organisation (RDO), working with us to progress the program’s expansion across the Indian Ocean Territories.

About the Role

We are looking for a high-energy local champion to be our “boots on the ground.” You will work closely with our mainland Business Development Manager (BDM) to keep current operations running smoothly while building the “buzz” needed to expand the library to the dozens of households and businesses currently on our waiting list.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Continuity (2–4 hours/week)

  • Administration: Manage invoicing and track payments to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Operational Support: Coordinate with local partners (such as Hambleys IGA and Altitude Island Logistics) and Perth partners to ensure smooth esky rotations.
  • Community Care: Maintain regular, friendly communication with our current participants, providing updates and troubleshooting issues.
  • Storytelling: Work with our Head of Comms to capture local photos and develop social media content that celebrates our environmental impact.

2. Strategic Growth & Expansion (4–6 hours/week)

  • Growth & Onboarding: Induct and onboard new participants and local businesses to move them off the program’s waiting list.
  • Logistics Problem-Solving: Consult with existing partners to identify and establish more efficient pathways for the return of reusable eskies.
  • Engagement: Act as the local face of the project on Christmas Island, building excitement and energy for a polystyrene-free island.

About You

You are the perfect fit if you:

  • Know the Island: You are a long-term Christmas Island resident with deep local roots and a strong understanding of the unique local landscape.
  • Are Passionate: You truly believe in the Esky Library’s mission to protect the marine environment and reduce landfill waste.
  • Are a “Fixer”: You have excellent attention to detail and aren’t afraid to troubleshoot logistical hiccups as they arise.
  • Are a People Person: You can build rapport quickly with community members, local businesses, and government stakeholders.

How to apply

If you are ready to help the Esky Library reach its full potential, please send a CV and a brief cover letter outlining your experience on the island and why you love this project to heidi@tangaroablue.org.

Applications close: As soon as we find the right person!

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage Christmas Island locals from all backgrounds to apply.
