Over 2000 volunteers came together across 143 events for Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s 20th anniversary WA Beach Clean-up. During October, community groups, schools, businesses and individuals cleaned up more than 159 km of the coast!
The 7.3 tonnes of marine debris removed from the coastline makes a significant contribution to protecting WA’s marine environment. The data from these clean-ups contribute to two decades of marine debris data captured in the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database. This national repository, supported by over 3,100 organisations, is a vital resource for identifying trends and informing strategies to stop marine debris at its source.
The most common items collected were:
- 34,870 hard plastic remnants
- 34,104 items of primary plastic feedstock (e.g., nurdles, pellets, and additives)
- 14,289 pieces of plastic packaging
Plastic Pollution
The clean-up results show a clear need for policymakers to act on plastic pollution, including tightening regulations for plastic producers who regularly pollute plastic feedstock into the environment.
