Source Reduction

Using marine debris data to inform plans to prevent plastic pollution and waste at its source.

What is a Source Reduction Plan?

Tangaroa Blue and our partners record data on what we find on beach clean-ups in the AMDI Database. This collection of data from over 30 million items is then used to identify common debris and where it’s coming from. The AMDI Framework empowers local communities to collaborate on strategies to prevent specific target marine debris items from entering their local environment.

These strategies are known as Source Reduction Plans (SRPs) or Source Reduction Initiatives. Below are examples of source reduction plans in action.

If you’re interested in creating your own Source Reduction Plan, you can access detailed information, how-to guides and case studies through the Blue Guardians Community area of Tangaroa Blue’s Knowledge Base.

Litter Hero

Litter discarded by people in public spaces is one source of marine debris we can easily tackle. Litter Hero aims to change littering behaviour by educating the public and event vendors on proper disposal.
