The BIG Beach Cleanup By Visionary Ocean Warriors – Caloundra.
Get your mates together to join in the fun at the BIG beach Cleanup on Saturday 16th October from 9am to 1pm at Happy Valley, Caloundra.
Chill out to live tunes at the beach, and then bag yourself some free stuff for your efforts!
The free event is collectively highlighting the real problem of marine debris and plastic pollution. Grab this opportunity to become a citizen scientist, learn plastic free alternatives, take part in free workshops, and hang out with other like minded individuals who are keen to make a difference for the planet. Hosted by Visionary Ocean Warriors, a NFP informal group made up of school aged kids, who have been actively engaging the local Caloundra community with beach cleans for the past 4 years.Visionary Ocean Warriors encourage young people’s participation in all their beach cleans. The group continues to highlight the threat of marine pollution and empowers members of the community to make a difference, their goal is to advocate for the marine animals and health of our oceans, believing you are never too young to care for the future of the planet.
Visionary Ocean Warriors will be joined by other community groups all working together towards a healthier ocean and planet. Come along and meet the amazing crew from Sea Shepherd, the global direct action conservation group, who will be ready to answer any questions and highlight volunteer opportunities to take further action.
Every cleanup participant will receive a free Boomerang Bag after the beach clean that can be filled with donated items from the awesome onsite pre-loved shop. Boomerang Bags are a grassroots movement sewing sustainable bags to tackle plastic pollution at its source. A great incentive for participation while promoting a circular economy system and helping to reduce second item items heading to landfill. Fantastic prizes will be on offer for the most debris collected and most unusual items found. The super Mend-it Café initiative will be in operation for community members to bring along simple clothing repairs.
While all the action takes place there will be live music from young local musicians and marine debris art will be displayed using rubbish found on the beach, highlighting and raising awareness of the items frequently left behind and littered on the Sunshine Coast beaches.
An AUSMAP microplastic study will take place at 9am, a citizen science initiative that involves sieving sections of the beach to capture small pieces of plastic known as Microplastics. All marine debris collected will be documented into the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) to create Source Reduction Plans to address the major causes of local marine pollution.
The BIG Beach Cleanup promotes positive impact and change for our oceans and its inhabitants.
The BIG Beach Clean Up is supported by Sunshine Coast Council.
