Back Beach (Mapoon) is approximately 900km north of Cairns (about three-quarters of the way up to Cape York) and is situated on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, on the traditional lands and seas of the Tjungundji People.
This area is full of diverse wildlife and is a popular nesting site for flatback, green, olive ridley, and hawksbill marine turtles.
At this event we will be working alongside the Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation (OMAC) and the Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers. Together, we will get as much debris off the beach as we can and sort through what we’ve picked up so we can divert items from landfill and contribute data to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database.
We will depart from Cairns early, travelling to Coen where we will spend our first night on the road. There will be opportunities to pull the cameras out at some side-stops over the two-day drive before reaching our campsite which we will call home for the next five days.
Seats are limited so register early to secure your spot! Volunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join our convoy, or can meet us on site, just let us know!
The camping area at Cullen Point, Mapoon will have toilets and cold showers. The mosquitoes and sandflies can be a bit full-on, so please pack suitable clothing to protect you from bites. We will set up the kitchen and prepare our meals together. Tangaroa Blue will provide all relevant equipment and will cater for the five days we’re camping out at Mapoon. All you need to bring is your personal and sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillows, mattress, etc).
We will be working on the traditional land and sea country of the Tjungundji People, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
The 2022 Mapoon Beach Clean-up is funded by the Morris Family Foundation
