Clorox ordered to pay $8.25m in penalties for misleading ‘ocean plastic’ claims after Tangaroa Blue Complaint

  • April 14, 2025

Tangaroa Blue Foundation and the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) are celebrating a major campaign win against greenwashing.

Following their complaint, the ACCC has successfully taken action against Clorox, the parent company of GLAD, for making false and misleading claims about “ocean plastic” in their products.

Clorox has now been ordered to pay $8.25 million in penalties for marketing GLAD kitchen and garbage bags as being made from recycled “ocean plastic” – a claim that simply isn’t possible. Plastics collected from the marine environment are too degraded to be recycled into new products.

We also raised concerns about the use of the term “ocean bound plastic” – a misleading phrase used by industry to describe plastic collected from anywhere up to 50km inland, far from the ocean itself.

This case is a big step forward in holding companies accountable and ensuring consumers aren’t misled by false environmental claims. Huge thanks to the team at EDO and to everyone supporting the movement for honest, science-based sustainability.
