Cleaning-up Marine Debris on Country with the Lama Lama Rangers

  • November 18, 2025

Cleaning-up on Country with the Lama Lama Rangers

Last month, Tangaroa Blue Coordinators Georgia and AJ headed up to Port Stewart in Princess Charlotte Bay to work alongside the Lama Lama Rangers on their 2025 Great Barrier Reef Clean-up event.
The team worked with the Senior and Junior Rangers from Port Stewart, Silver Plains, and Running Creek bases, along with DAFF and Mangrove Watch, heading out to the Running Creek Beach to clean-up marine debris.
Together, they removed 102kg of debris in just one hour! Hard plastic remnants, plastic lids, and shoes were the top three items found.

An Aerial View of Marine Debris

“We were already feeling lucky to work on beautiful land and sea country when the TOs offered us a ride in the helicopter to complete an aerial marine debris survey! We flew over beaches and wetlands all the way from Marina Plains to the Massey River, spotting ghost nets, FADs, tuna trackers, plastic drums, and of course, lots of amazing wildlife!”

A big thank you to the Rangers

“We are so incredibly thankful to the Lama Lama Rangers for being so welcoming and enthusiastic during the clean-up, and for helping us to do some amazing work. We can’t wait to head back and continue cleaning up these remote beaches after identifying priority areas.” Says Coordinator Georgia.
