Contribute to EcoBrick research

The Tangaroa Blue team have been finding a number of EcoBricks washing up along the Australian coast over the past few years. For those of you who donโ€™t know, EcoBricks are PET bottles packed solid with clean and dry used plastic. EcoBricks are made manually to a set density to sequester plastic and create reusable building blocks. In this way EcoBricks aim to contribute to a circular economy, especially in countries where plastic litter is easy to find so it

1669kgs of marine debris removed from Darwin Harbour

On a muggy day in October, 154 volunteers from 21 different organisations pitched in to collect 1669kgs of debris from coastal areas around Darwin Harbour, from Wagait to Casuarina Coastal Reserve. Some went on foot, some by boat, and some by jet ski! After a hot morning cleaning up our beaches and waterways, the debris was brought back to Fishermans Wharf to be weighed and sorted by the Larrakia Rangers and Tangaroa Blue. The majority of the items collected included

Rubber Crumb Loss from GBR Play Areas

Many play areas have soft fall surfaces made of recycled rubber tyres applied as small pieces of crumb (1-5 mm in size). The use of rubber crumb in playgrounds and synthetic sports fields has been around for over a decade, although there has been a recent increase in investment in this product to try and deal with the more than 48 million tyres reaching end of life every year in Australia. Tackling Bait Bags and Light Sticks

Tangaroa Blue Foundation has been working with Oceanwatch Australia to develop two Source Reduction Plans focused on fishing-related bait bags and professional fishing-related light sticks as part of the ReefClean Program. Both projects have been designed through conducting a source analysis approach rather than working from a littering reduction perspective. This approach was used to allow for the adoption of new innovations which can work alongside traditional behaviour change mechanisms to do the right thing reducing the incidence of bait

2020 ReefClean Report: Challenging COVID to Deliver Reef-wide Success

The 2020 ReefClean Report showcases what is possible with strong partners, adaptive management and creativity! We were thrilled that all ReefClean deliverables were met even with the challenges that 2020 presented. In 2020, 15.5 tonnes of marine debris was removed from the environment across all Great Barrier Reef Natural Resource Management regions from the Torres Strait to the Burnett Mary. Not surprisingly, the total number of volunteers involved in clean-up events decreased by approximately 19% from 2,200 volunteers in 2019
