2023 WA Beach Clean-up

Our annual WA Beach Clean-up is back for another year! Our WA Project Coordinators are working to increase the beaches and waterways covered and are both really looking forward to connecting to the communities that care for the wild shores of Western Australia over the 13th-15th of October.

First ‘Project ReCon’ Ghost Gear Captured

Project ReCon tracks and retrieves first deadly and destructive ghost gear 4 kms off the coast from Weipa The first ghost gear has been tracked by Tangaroa Blue’s Project ReCon team and retrieved by the Nanum Wungthim Land & Sea Management Rangers, 4 kms off the coast of Weipa. With the support of Satlink, the Project ReCon team repurposed an echo sounder buoy, which was recovered during a recent clean-up, to track and monitor the 3 tonnes of discarded commercial fishing

Conservation Adventures on Cocos Keeling Islands

Article from 06/09/2023 A small volunteer team joined WA Project Coordinator Casey for an additional few days on Cocos (Keeling) Islands at the beginning of her Indian Ocean Territories voyage. The crew were greeted by crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and shallow coral reef systems teeming with life. Preserving Christmas Island

Accompanied by a team of 14 dedicated volunteers, Casey Woodward, WA Project Coordinator for Tangaroa Blue, embarked on a remarkable journey spanning 2600km to reach the remote haven of Christmas Island in the heart of the Indian Ocean. This island, a supremely biodiverse region of Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories (IOT), has been a recurring destination for Tangaroa Blue since 2017.

Over 3 Tonnes Removed from Mapoon

Mapoon is situated on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, on the lands and seas of the Tjungundji People, approximately 900km north of Cairns. Mapoon Aboriginal Community is situated on the Southern shores of Port Musgrave which is where the mighty Wenlock River and Ducie Rivers meet and drain into the Indian Ocean. How Citizen science projects can support UN Sustainable Development Goals

We are excited to see the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database being used in this paper to explore how citizen science projects measuring beach plastic debris can support the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The UN established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework for sustainable development, including SDG 14, which aims to reduce marine pollution, specifically plastic debris. A Record-Breaking Cleanup in Wuthathi

Wuthathi Ngaachi (Country) and Karakara (Sea Country) is located in the area surrounding Shelburne Bay on the North Eastern coast of Cape York, about 800km north of Cairns. It is a place full of incredible cultural significance and biodiversity, and the landscape absolutely takes your breath away. However, unfortunately the beaches are heavily impacted by marine debris from locations far and wide.

White spill: Life cycle assessment approach to managing marine EPS litter from flood-released pontoons

The South-east Queensland rains and Flooding Event of February–March 2022 was caused by prolonged, severe rains which caused fatalities, destruction of houses, businesses, and transportation systems and infrastructure, and led to the environmental catastrophe known as the “White Spill” event. Extreme volumes of marine debris flowed into open water across the Eastern Seaboard of Australia as flood waters began to drain from the inundated landmass. The force of the floodwaters dislodged and damaged infrastructure including marine pontoons from river systems
