Zero Plastics by Mid-2020

Great news! Single-use plastics will no longer be issued from Victoria’s Bayside Council’s Corporate Centre and libraries by the end of June this year. Other Council-owned properties such as community centres and senior citizen centres will stop using single-use plastics by the end of June 2020 as Council commits to a future of zero single-use plastics.   This great initiative was proposed by Elizabeth Jensen President of Marine Care Ricketts Point who explained: “Beach Patrol volunteers spend countless hours cleaning

Stars Shine a Light on Marine Debris

In April, Tangaroa Blue Foundation and We-Refill joined together for a beach clean-up during BluesFest, one of Australia’s longest running and largest music festivals. The clean-up event was part of the global launch of the #BYOBottle campaign, and they had a little help from their friends. While bands were playing and festival goers were revelling, a few stars took some time out to join a crew of volunteers to give back. Heidi Tait, CEO of Tangaroa Blue said, “It’s important

Victorian Plastic Bag Ban

Good news! The Victorian Government is implementing a state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags from 1 November 2019. This is good news as the majority of these bags currently end up in landfill and around 10 million end up as litter. This causes major pollution to our environment and endangers wildlife. When the ban starts it will be illegal for any retailer in Victoria to provide lightweight plastic shopping bags. It will also be illegal for suppliers to withhold

The School for Field Studies at Orpheus Island, October 2019

Twenty-nine students and staff from the School for Field Studies (SFS) visited Orpheus Island from 10-12 October 2019. Marine debris was our focus on the day that we arrived on Orpheus and we made our way over to Figtree Bay in the afternoon heat. Once there we divided into three teams and set about our two tasks.   Our first task was to sort the bags of debris collected, but not sorted, by the previous SFS group who visited Orpheus

Detailing Data Entries

The AMDI Database is an extensive platform which, as of May 2019, contains over 13.5 million recorded items. At the clean-up level, each of these debris items are sorted and counted, then uploaded onto the Database in their item groups. For example, the “Straws, confection sticks, cups, plates & cutlery items” group. These items are grouped together as they are all food-related, but as this is a broad category, there’s great potential for the user to add more detail.

One Last Cyclone for the Season

Ex-tropical Cyclone Ann brought with her unseasonal rain as she crossed the Far North Queensland coast last week, and this rain threatened to postpone the annual beach clean-up event scheduled for Archer Point on 19 May 2019. Despite the less than ideal conditions, almost 40 volunteers arrived at this popular campsite to assist the Yuku Baja Muliku Rangers and their Junior Ranger Team to clean the beaches in the area.   The beaches all the way from the Lighthouse and
