Goals
The Hand Bin is designed to be a convenient solution for beach litter. Simple in design, aimed at reducing litter and educating others on the value of our marine environment. To encourage changes in behaviour, enabling people to do the right thing and inspire positive change.Â
To monitor and conduct litter collection audits at the following locations, The Strand, Townsville, Rowes Bay, Townsville and Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas across 3 months.Â
The Hand Bin is designed by Share the Word Design Studio and a similar successful campaign was trialled in the Mornington Peninsula.
Measuring Success
Conducted 3 phased audits:
A litter collection audit was conducted at the three locations (The Strand, Townsville, Rowes Bay, Townsville and Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas) where the hand-bins were implemented 3 times, in 2-week intervals.Â

Challenges & Improvements
Unfortunately, several potential partners/businesses we reached out to within Townsville, Magnetic Island, and Port Douglas area could not be involved in the SRP at this time.Â
We would recommend more time to have in-depth engagements with businesses to allow for a wider impact and for the distribution of the hand bins.
Future Opportunities
Some local schools contacted Tangaroa Blue about the SRP campaign to implement it in their local area. They found out about the program through social media, which could be a useful tool if we wanted to expand the campaign in the future.
