Reefclean®

Removing and preventing marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef region.

reefClean.landscape.logo.CMYK

ReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and is delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation in partnership with a variety of organizations. Launched in early 2019, the project aims to remove and prevent marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef region.

A program of targeted and integrated marine debris activities, ReefClean has reduced the volume of debris generated in or entering the Great Barrier Reef that may impact threatened and migratory species and ecosystems. It has also increased awareness in Reef catchment communities about marine debris and actions they can undertake to prevent litter from entering Reef waterways.

This has occurred through:

  • Community clean-up events
  • Site monitoring
  • The Great Barrier Reef Clean-up event annually in October
  • Community Source Reduction Plan Workshops
  • School and community engagement activities
  • Data analysis
  • Disaster management clean-ups
  • Microplastics surveys

2024 - Today

In 2024, the ReefClean program received funding from the Federal Government’s Reef Trust for a further three year program. This program builds on and complements the initial program as well as existing programs and activities operating across the Great Barrier Reef and its catchment.

The 2024 – 2027 program aims to:

  • reduce the volume of debris generated in or entering the Great Barrier Reef, which may impact listed threatened and migratory species, such as dugongs and turtles, and the Reef’s ecosystems.
  • Increase awareness in Reef catchment communities about the issue of marine debris and actions they can take.
  • Embrace the circular economy principles to divert marine debris into ReefCycle and Rig Recycle programs.
  • Provide an integrated framework for addressing marine debris that connects all relevant stakeholders and provides scalable resources, case studies, and solutions.

2019 - 2023

The initial five year program funded by the Federal Government’s Reef Trust, started in 2019. The project aimed to remove and prevent marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef region through to 2023.

To do this, Tangaroa Blue Foundation partnered with several organisations to achieve success: Reef Check Australia, Capricornia Catchments, Eco Barge Clean Seas, OceanWatch Australia, South Cape York Catchments and AUSMAP.

The initial ReefClean program was delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation and more than 400 stakeholders from 2019-2023.

75kg in 45 minutes. 💪🌊 The Great Barrier Reef Cle 75kg in 45 minutes. 💪🌊

The Great Barrier Reef Clean-up 2026 is officially underway.

Around 30 volunteers hit Pallarenda Beach in Townsville this morning, removing close to 75kg of marine debris in just 45 minutes — including plenty of plastic, cigarette butts, drink bottles and cans.

And it’s not just about what we remove.

We record the debris collected in the Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database, helping us understand where marine debris comes from and how we can stop it at the source.

Want to get involved? You can:

The Great Barrier Reef Clean-up runs throughout October, so there’s still time to get involved.

And the numbers tell quite a story:

♻️ 407+ bags of debris
🪢 1,144.6 kg of rope
🥤 38.7 kg of bottle lids — thousands of them
🧴 Two Bulka bags of eligible containers collected for Containers for Change, with the proceeds going to Lockhart State School

Hard plastics were separated for recycling, rope was saved to be repurposed into artwork in Cairns, and students got a very hands-on lesson in what belongs on a beach, and what definitely doesn’t.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time, energy, vehicles, equipment and local knowledge to make the Chilli Beach clean-up possible.

🏅 As Team Australia climbs the medal tally in Glas 🏅 As Team Australia climbs the medal tally in Glasgow, we’re celebrating another Commonwealth achievement.

The Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, a partnership between the Royal Commonwealth Society and Commonwealth Sport, has reached an incredible milestone, with 1 million pieces of plastic removed from Commonwealth waterways thanks to more than 15,000 volunteers.

Tangaroa Blue was proud to contribute through ReefClean, hosting a clean-up in Townsville and creating 275 Drift Discs from marine plastics recovered during Cape York ReefClean events.

Each recycled Drift Disc was engraved for Team Australia and included in every athlete’s official Glasgow 2026 kit, giving every competitor a unique reminder of the communities working to protect our oceans.

When the King’s Baton Relay arrived in Sydney, our CEO Heidi Tait presented the very first Drift Disc to Commonwealth Games Australia President Ben Houston at Admiralty House.

Good luck to every Australian athlete competing in Glasgow, and thank you to every volunteer proving that small actions can a big impact. 🌊

Our volunteers trekked through the Daintree rainforest, wondering if the weather would get better. Thankfully, it did, and by the end of the day, they had removed 105.2kg of marine debris from Baku, Cape Kimberley 🙌

The biggest surprise wasn’t the total weight. It was what made up most of it.

Rather than large items, the majority consisted of small plastic fragments, bottle lids and polystyrene foam.

A reminder that tiny pieces of plastic don’t disappear. They accumulate over time, becoming one of the biggest challenges to remove from our beaches.

Thank you to every volunteer who gave their time and energy, and to @douglasshirecouncil for supporting the clean-up.

Every piece collected helps protect the Great Barrier Reef and builds the data needed to prevent marine debris at its source.

In just a few short hours, the Hope Vale Congress In just a few short hours, the Hope Vale Congress Rangers, alongside local community members and the ReefClean team, removed more than 700kg of marine debris from this remote stretch of coastline in Far North Queensland 💙🌊

Cape Bedford experiences a high debris load, with large numbers of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), tuna tracking buoys and ghost gear washing ashore ⚓️🎣

These commercial fishing items can have significant impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems, entangling wildlife, damaging habitats and continuing to fish long after they have been lost or discarded.

Community action like this plays a vital role in protecting the Great Barrier Reef and preventing marine debris from impacting our coastlines and marine environment 🐢🪸
