Marine Discovery Centre Victoria

MDCQV Intro"Promoting sustainability and conservation by increasing awareness and understanding of the marine environment." Creating an awareness of the issues concerning Victorian fisheries, recreational fishing and the marine and freshwater environment is a key concern of the Department of Primary Industries. The Marine Discovery Centre in Queenscliff provides education and eco-tourism services that aim to do just this.

Located on the shores of Swan Bay in Queenscliff approximately one and half hours from Melbourne, our centre provides a unique location to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit our coast and marine environment.

The Marine Discovery Centre provides curriculum-based education for early childhood, school and tertiary groups as well as programs for the general community. In addition we offer a number of specialised programs such as work experience, volunteer training, friends group and sand dune revegetation program.

Our facilities include a visitor's aquarium, student laboratory, classroom, a resource room and an educational gift shop and we are also ideally located for field activities being surrounded by a diverse range of habitats including rocky shores, mudflats, salt marshes, seagrass meadows, mangroves, sand dunes and temperate reefs. The majority of activities are conducted in Marine National Parks and Sanctuaries.

Marine Discovery Centre and Geelong East Primary School at the Beach!

20110812 MDCQ50 students from Geelong East Primary School and staff from the Marine Discovery Centre hit the beach at Ocean Grove along Victoria's surf coast for some coastcare activities on August 12th. Students were involved in some dune repair work by layering brush matting to eroded patches to the sand dunes near the beach access area. Once the sand has been stabilised by this brush matting the students will plant indigenous plants to revegetate the eroded area.

Marine Discovery Centre in Victoria is a Hotspot for Students Protecting Their Environment

201108 MCDQThe Marine Discovery Centre in Queenscliffe, Victoria is a great location for students to learn more about their unique marine environments. One of the activities that students have recently started participating in is a marine debris clean up and data collection which contributes vital information on the state of the local coastline to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative. The database is used by local, state and federal stakeholders to identify those items impacting each clean up site and then to find practical solutions to those issues.
