ReefBlitz 2016 BRAND Horizontal

Come celebrate the end of ReefBlitz 2018 by joining Tangaroa Blue Foundation for a couple of hours next Saturday out at Ross River, where the river meets the ocean. This site is our last chance to catch any litter flowing downstream before it makes it way out to the ocean, threatening marine wildlife and imperative nursery grounds for many species residing within Cleveland Bay. This site has also been one of our monitoring sites since March 2018 for the Plastic Bag Ban, and Container Deposit Scheme that has begun today, the 1st of November 2018!!

Where – clean-up site: Ross River, mangroves area off Southern Port Road
Where – meeting site: Parking on Benwell Road before crossing the river and it linking onto Southern Port Road. There’s overflow parking space on Archer Street if needed.
We are happy to transport you the short distance from your parked car down to the clean-up site as the terrain is a bit rough for lower set vehicles. If you have a ute and are happy to take it down please still meet us on Benwell Road at the parking area.

As a participant please bring:
- reusable water bottle
- wear sturdy enclosed footwear
- hat & sunnies, sunscreen
- sun smart clothing

ReefBlitz is an annual month-long series of events, which has been running for five years, engaging the community in citizen science and on-ground local action that contributes to reef health and resilience. Data will be recorded on the rubbish that is collected, which contributes to the 14-year-old Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database. There have been 8 coastal clean-up events running from October 12th to 28th around the Townsville and Magnetic Island area, where extensive data has been recorded to monitor the changes of litter in the environment in relation to the Plastic Bag Ban and recently implemented Container Deposit Scheme.
