SUMMARY:Curtis Island Community Beach Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:What: ReefClean – Curtis Island Community Beach Clean-Up\nWhen: Saturday 28th – Sunday 29th October, 2023 – 7:30am – 5:00pm\nWhere: We will meet at Curtis Ferry Services Terminal 215 Alf O’Rourke Drive, Gladstone Marina 7:30am for 8am Departure to Curtis Island returning by 5pm\nTo Register: Limited spaces are available so please contact Ian Anderson by email ian@tangaroablue.org or phone 0458 737 760\nYour own 4WD vehicle if you have one would be an advantage for movement around the island and Tangaroa Blue will meet the cost of barge transfer.\nThere will be an overnight camping option on Curtis for those wanting to do both days. Camping will be at the South End camp area and meals available at Capricorn Lodge \nCurtis Island Beach Clean-Up is one of our twice-yearly ReefClean Projects aimed at helping prevent marine debris impacting the Great Barrier Reef.\nThe clean-up is undertaken by Tangaroa Blue coordinating a group of volunteers to collect marine debris, sort and enter into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database.\nThis event will be done with support from Gladstone Regional Council. The event will be used to highlight the significance of the area by engaging volunteers in marine debris removal, data collection and entry into the AMDI Database. The data will then be used to assist in identifying the source of the marine debris and to develop strategies that prevent it occurring in the future.\nVolunteers need to wear enclosed shoes, bring sun/rain protection, and plenty of drinking water (1 to 2 litres is recommended). We try to ensure that all events are free from single-use plastic, so bring along your reusable water bottle. All equipment and drinking water top-ups will be provided.\nA huge thank you to Curtis Ferry Services, all three LNG Plants (Santos, ConocoPhillips, Shell QGC) and QPWS for this continued support of this event.\nWe would like to acknowledge the Port Curtis Coral Coast people, (the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng and Tarabilang Bunda groups) as Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet, and would also like to pay our respects to the Elders both past, present and emerging.\nCurtis Island is the second largest island in Queensland, with a large proportion of the island designated as National Park. The island borders the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and has significant turtle nesting habitat, wetlands and mangrove systems important for fish and bird life.\n———————————————–\nPlease note this is a COVID Safe Event – we do require volunteers to register. Please ensure that you check the latest QLD Government COVID requirements and if you feel unwell, please don’t attend and stay at home, we’ll catch you at a future event.\nReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation\n
