SUMMARY:Chilli Beach 10 Year Anniversary Clean-up – Cape York, QLD
DESCRIPTION:***Thank you everyone for your interest in this event. Unfortunately, we are at capacity in terms of seats in our vehicles. If you are still interested in joining and have your own 4×4, please contact mathilde@tangaroablue.org.***\nDates:\nTravel Cairns to Chilli Beach: 30th-31st July 2021\nClean-up: 1st-5th August 2021\nTravel Chilli Beach to Cairns: 6th-7th August 2021\nFor more information and to register please contact mathilde@tangaroablue.org\nA special year…\nJoin Tangaroa Blue and the community of Lockhart River to celebrate our 10th year of removing marine debris from the beautiful Chilli Beach! Over the past decade, a whopping 601,270 items, weighing 35 tonne, have been recorded, and that is not even all of the debris that has been pulled off the shores since 2011. This year will be a celebration of the dedication of volunteers, QPWS Rangers, Kuuku Ya’u Land Trust Rangers, Lockhart River School students and community members over the years.\nEvent Details\nChilli Beach is a 7km stretch of white tropical beach, fringed with coconut palms and impressive sand dunes, with magnificent pink sunrises that make this place paradise! Unfortunately, it is also another hotspot for marine debris in the remote Cape York region. We will rehabilitate the stretch of coastline over five days by removing, sorting and recording rubbish items from this beach and entering it into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database.\nWe will meet and depart from Cairns early in the morning, travelling to Coen where we will spend our first night on the road. We will make some side stops over the two-day drive before reaching our campsite which we will call home for the next five days.\nSeats are limited so register early to secure your spot! Volunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join our convoy to drive up to this event, or can meet us on site, just let us know.\nWe will be in close proximity to the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River, so basic shopping facilities are a relatively short trip away by car. The camp area is very basic with only toilets onsite and we will be able to do one shower run throughout the week to QLD Parks and Wildlife’s base.\nWe will set up our kitchen and prepare our meals together, so all food and equipment will be provided. All you need to bring is your sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillow, mattress, etc).\nCOVID-19 restrictions and requirements\nTangaroa Blue will be adhering to the latest advice from the QLD Government on COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. Prior to departure, participants will be asked to declare that they have not come from overseas or any other recognised COVID-19 hotspot in the past fortnight and that they have not displayed any COVID-19 like symptoms within 14 days of the trip departure date.\nDue to limited space on this clean-up, we will be conducting a short interview with interested volunteers.\nThe event is part of the ReefClean program, aiming to clean-up reduce the volume of marine debris generated in or entering the Great Barrier Reef and threatening the health of the reef and its inhabitants.\nReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and is delivered by the Tangaroa Blue Foundation.\nFor more information and to register please contact mathilde@tangaroablue.org\n
