SUMMARY:ReefClean – Chilli Beach Clean-up – Cape York, QLD
DESCRIPTION:Dates:\nTravel Cairns to Chilli Beach: 10th & 11th August 2020\nClean-up: 12th – 16th August\nTravel Chilli Beach to Cairns: 17th & 18th August\nFor more information and to register please contact mathilde@tangaroablue.org\nCOVID-19 restrictions and requirements: Tangaroa Blue will be adhering to the latest advice from the QLD Government on COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. Unfortunately, people travelling from Victoria will not be able to attend this event as we need to take extra precautions due to working in remote communities. Prior to departure, participants will be asked to declare that they have not come from overseas, Victoria or any other recognised COVID-19 hotspot in the past fortnight and that they have not displayed any COVID-19 like symptoms within 14 days of the trip departure date.\nDue to limited space on this clean-up, we will be conducting a short interview with interested volunteers.\nEvent Details\nChilli Beach is a 7km stretch of white tropical beach, fringed with coconut palms and impressive sand dunes, with magnificent pink sunrises that make this place paradise! Unfortunately, it is also another hotspot for marine debris in the remote Cape York region. We will rehabilitate the stretch of coastline over five days by removing, sorting and recording rubbish items from this beach and entering it into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database.\nWe will meet and depart from Cairns at 8am, travelling to Coen where we will spend our first night on the road. We will make some side stops over the two-day drive before reaching our campsite which we will call home for the next five days.\nVolunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join our convoy to drive up to this event, or can meet us on site, just let us know!\nWe will be in close proximity to the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River, so basic shopping facilities are a relatively short trip away by car. The camp area is very basic with only toilets onsite and we will be able to do one shower run throughout the week to QLD Parks and Wildlife’s base.\nWe will set up our kitchen and prepare our meals together, so all food and equipment will be provided. All you need to bring is your sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillow, mattress, etc).\nThis event is being funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust.\n
