SUMMARY:ReefClean – AUSMAP Training Day, Townsville
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PROGRAM\nIt’s hard to solve a problem you can’t see. Until recently microplastic pollution presented scientists with a crisis that was invisible to the naked eye. Now we have AUSMAP, Australian Microplastic Assessment Project.\nBy translating data into detailed maps of plastic pollution hotspots all over Australia, AUSMAP makes it easy for everyone to see the scale and nature of this growing problem.\nWe need to know how much is already out there before we figure out what to do with it. And we need large numbers of Australians to engage with behaviour change so we can stop any more plastic disintegrating into our waterways. That’s why AUSMAP is a collaborative citizen science project. Together we can all do something to clean up our rivers and oceans.\nABOUT THE TRAINING\nLearn about AUSMAP & participate in a full-day training session hosted at CVA Townsville. Participants will be trained in the sampling methodology for collecting, sorting and identifying microplastics. Field sampling will take place on a beach close to the event. A practical accreditation will take place in the afternoon session, an essential part of the official AUSMAP program.\nInstructors: Dr. Michelle Blewitt (AUSMAP Program Director) & Ms. Toni Wilson (AUSMAP Lead Trainer)\nHosts: Tangaroa Blue through the ReefClean project & Conservation Volunteers Australia, Townsville.\nA light morning tea will be provided. BYO sustainable lunch. Limited places, please book asap via Eventbrite: https://ausmaptrainingtownsville2019.eventbrite.com.au.\nFAQs\nWhat is the cost? AUSMAP Training day is a FREE program. Although a donation to support the ongoing development and delivery of the program will be greatly appreciated.\nWhat do I need to bring? We will be sampling on the beach, so please bring sun protection & wet weather gear, including being able to get your feet wet.\nNo single-use plastics ~ BYO reusable drink bottle & cup.\nReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust.\n
