Floating Island in the Hawkesbury River

20130403 HarleyThe 3rd of April saw five members from Rolland Hassall 'Support' High School head out to the Hawkesbury River/Bar Point/Milson Island as part of the Hawkesbury River Clean Up Program.

- Milson Island northern mangrove from the jetty, was thoroughly cleaned, many broken glass items recovered. Five full bags removed from this area;
- The Parramatta wreck was not able to be reached, due to the low tide;
- Two sections of mangroves were cleaned near Bar Point, with high numbers of plastic and old bottles collected. This site is a collection point for flood waters containing large amounts of debris and these mangroves near Bar Point have not been cleaned before;

- Seven car tyres, together with foam and boat hulls stacked for Mondays bulk pickup;
- A large area of floating debris was adjacent to bar Point public wharf, large tree items present with abundant plastic and bamboo weed. The floating Island is 100meters long, and very dangerous to boating traffic;
- Eight full bags collected from the foreshore and two large trees tide up at Deerubben Reserve boat ramp;
- 13 full bags delivered into the Council bins at Deerubbin.

Again a great effort by the students and volunteers to help clean up this major river system!
