Umina Students Clean Up Mangrove Island

20130227 Mangrove IslandThis was the first trip for the students of Brisbane Waters Secondary College (Umina Support Unit) as part of the Brisbane Waters Foreshore Program, and the mission for the day was to continue to stack bulk items on the Paddy's site and remove small items from Mangrove Island.

The tides were favourable for access to the islands and efforts on the western foreshore of Mangrove Island produced five full bags of small litter, with eight large oyster trays removed. Two full boat loads transferred to Paddy Channel bulk site for removal this coming Friday.

A large concrete boat mooring with chain was found close to the Mangrove foreshore and the foreshore to the North and South of the bulk site were then cleaned, with another 14 oyster trays removed and transferred back to the bulk site. Eight full bags were also dropped off.

Total of 13 full bags and 22 oyster trays were deposited at the bulk site with an estimated one tonne now stockpiled for Friday's pick up. The day also produced good local networking completed by the students and coordinator during the day and a big thanks to Josh for his outstanding peer support!
