HNCMA Foreshore Cleanup Program

The area that was on the list to clean up was the "back" end of Jerusalem Bay in Sydney's Hawkesbury River.

Launching from Parsley Bay the young group of students traveled to Jerusalem Bay where the "back end" of the bay was accessible, due to the high tide. This area has not been monitored since September 2011, and little rubbish was found.

Small plastic items were removed from the picnic area at Jerusalem and a hermit hut is present at Jerusalem Bay, in a neat and tidy condition. The foreshore on the northern side of the bay was closely monitored with all small "coves" checked and cleaned. Fisherman's Beach had minor small items, which were removed.

The building north east wind and outgoing tide "whipped" the waterway, with a wet and rough ride home. It was good to see a cleaner than normal environment with only two only bags being recovered, plus two "crab traps".

All litter was counted for inclusion in the Australian Marine Debris Database prior to depositing into the council bins at Parsley Bay.

Recommendations

  • The lower Hawkesbury and Cowan Creek foreshores are in a tidy condition, and will only need monitoring prior to Christmas 2012.
  • Little Pittwater, Flint and Steel, Great Mackerel then to The Basin be monitored prior to Christmas.
  • Bobbin Head to Smiths Creek be monitored by the Roland Hassall group in two weeks.
  • Berowra Waters be monitored.
