St Mary’s is a single stream school which offers a close knit environment where each individual matters and staff know all of the approximately 150 students by name. St Mary’s has a FIRST Lego League (FLL) team which is competing in an international competition catering for 9 to 16 year old students to foster knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths. The competition involves teams of up to 10 students building, programming and competing with a robot, while also learning about a modern problem in science and engineering and developing solutions for it. This year the problem relates to trash. More information is available at this link: https://firstaustralia.org/programs/first-lego-league/

Posters to Help Educate!

FLL Poster 1The students in St Mary’s FLL team have focused on the problem of plastic waste in our oceans and the harm this is doing to sea birds and sea animals. They have designed a series of posters that they hope will encourage people to take responsibility for the waste that they produce. The posters use the principles seen in cigarette packaging (short slogans with graphic images) to “shock” people into action and encourage them to take responsibility for their actions.
