Source Reduction Plan Workshops

Phillip Island Nature Parks, working with Tangaroa Blue Foundation invites you to participate in an exciting project to tackle marine debris & litter at the source.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australia-wide not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris. As a leading expert in addressing the marine debris issue, Tangaroa Blue Foundation has been coordinating Source Reduction Plan workshops around Port Phillip Bay in 2017. Phillip Island and surrounds now has the opportunity to become involved in one of these hands on workshops!

Cleaning up areas like beaches, waterways, streets and parks is essential to reduce the impacts of marine debris & litter, but this is only a Band-Aid approach to what has become a major environmental issue worldwide. “If all we do is clean-up, that’s all we’ll ever do” - Heidi Taylor, Tangaroa Blue Foundation. The only way of making a real change is analysing where the litter & debris comes from, and finding ways of stopping it ending up in our ocean and rivers in the first place - a Source Reduction Plan.

The aim of the source reduction plan workshop is to empower the Bass Coast community to help reduce litter at the source.

The hands-on workshops will include:
• An introduction to the framework for developing a Source Reduction Plan
• A summary of the top items/groups of items being found around Phillip Island
• Overview of the location and effort of clean-up activities
• The latest news and approaches of tackling the marine debris issue using examples from around Australia and the world
• Using a partnership approach to develop a Source Reduction Plan

We are looking for a range of people to participate in the workshop. If you are involved in clean-ups, collecting marine debris & litter data, working on initiatives to tackle the sources of marine debris & litter, are looking to get more information on this issue and are involved in being part of efforts to stop marine debris & litter at the source - this workshop is for you!

Registrations are now open and it’s free to participate. Numbers are limited so please send in your registration as soon as possible (positions are limited).

When: 9th December 2017
Time: 12:30-4:30pm
Where: The Nobbies Centre, 1320 Ventnor Rd, Summerlands VIC 3922.

Frequently asked questions?
I don't collect data (or much data) on what marine debris & litter items are found, but I am involved clean-ups. Can I still participate?
Yes, we would love you to get involved

There are several people at my organisation that would like to participate. Can I register for more than one person?
Yes. You can register up to two people, but to enable a wide representation at the workshop we may not be able to offer positions to all of your registrants.

Is this workshop about getting clean-up groups to collect more data? We are already doing as much as we can.
No, the workshops are about identifying what is being found and how we can work together to stop or reduce marine debris at the source.

I do clean-ups of streets/parks/business districts, but I don't clean-up beaches and/or waterways. Can I still participate?
